Dormant and lost savings accounts

Could you be cashing in on a lost or dormant account?

If you think you have a savings account with us which you’ve simply forgotten about, or if you’ve lost the documentation for an account, simply pop into one of our local branches with some photographic ID and we’ll try to trace it for you.

To help us find it faster, please try to bring one or all of the following along:

  • Any old passbooks
  • Any correspondence from us i.e. letters/statements

Any other information you have which relates to the account

What is a dormant or lost account?

If a savings account has been inactive for 15 years or more, it is referred to as dormant.

This means that any money in the account will remain and you will continue to accrue interest, but you will no longer receive interest statements or any correspondence relating to the account.

At Progressive, we will endeavour to contact you if this happens and guide you on how to re-activate the account.

How to reclaim your money

It’s worth knowing that should an account become dormant, it can be re-activated at any time.

All you have to do is call into one of our branches with photographic ID, e.g. a current passport or driving licence, and make a transaction. You will then begin to receive interest statements and correspondence again.

Alternatively, upon proof of account ownership, you can close the account and reclaim your money.

Some reasons why an account may become lost or dormant

There can be a number of different reasons why. In all of life’s busyness you may have simply forgotten about it or you may not have even known about it in the first place. Here are just some reasons to think about:

  • If you moved home and didn’t tell your savings account provider
  • If a parent opened a savings account for you as a child
  • If a relative has passed away who had a savings account, you may be entitled to claim it.

There are billions of pounds of unclaimed cash and assets in lost and dormant bank accounts across the UK.

Take a moment to check if you could be cashing in on one.
